I wrote this more than ten years<\/a> ago (with minor changes to tenses to suit the new context):<\/p>\n

Feral capitalism is the unfettered, wild form of capitalism that we have suffered for\u00a0thirty\u00a0years: a form where people are constrained but money is allowed to roam free whence it will with\u00a0consequences\u00a0now all too clear.<\/p>\n

Tax havens are fundamental to this form of capitalism - they let the money flow unhindered and unaccountable; they are in effect the aircraft carriers from which assaults on major democratic states and their policies can be launched.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Today we have this story in the Guardian<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The government\u2019s failure to tackle Russian kleptocrats\u00a0laundering \u201cdirty money\u201d through the UK\u00a0has led millions of pounds used to finance Putin\u2019s invasion of Ukraine to flow through London, a powerful committee of MPs has warned.<\/p>\n

The commons foreign affairs committee said ministers\u2019 complacency over \u201cmorally bankrupt billionaires using the UK as a safe deposit box\u201d had led to \u201cassets laundered through the UK \u2026 financing President Putin\u2019s war in Ukraine\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I did issue an appropriate warning - and repeated it many times. But the Tories - who control the Committee that issued the report I note - would not listen. The question to ask now is why was that?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
