{"id":5721,"date":"2010-01-04T10:50:04","date_gmt":"2010-01-04T08:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=5721"},"modified":"2010-01-04T10:50:04","modified_gmt":"2010-01-04T08:50:04","slug":"blatant-misinformation-from-the-ft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2010\/01\/04\/blatant-misinformation-from-the-ft\/","title":{"rendered":"Blatant misinformation from the FT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/e7b2258a-f8af-11de-beb8-00144feab49a.html\">FT.com \/ UK \/ Economy &amp; Trade - UK deficit warning from City economists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The FT notes:<\/p>\n<div class=\"ft-story-header\">\n<blockquote><p>Britain is in danger of succumbing to a budgetary crisis this year, with the economy likely to stay in the doldrums until at least the end of 2010, a Financial Times survey of economists warns.<\/p>\n<p>Sir John Gieve, former deputy governor of the central bank, said that inadequate plans for addressing the fiscal deficit could result in sharp rate rises and a fall in the pound.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"section\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal; font-size: 13px;\">Howard Davies, director of the London School of Economics and a former member of the Bank of England&rsquo;s monetary policy committee, said: &ldquo;The major risk is the loss of confidence in the government&rsquo;s ability to get the public finances back under control.&rdquo;<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal; font-size: 13px;\">The impression given is clear: the headline is \"<\/span>UK deficit warning from City economists\". You'd presume the message was unambiguous: cust now would seem to be the demand.<\/p>\n<p>But it's not:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Asked to name the three biggest risks to the economy, 37 of the 79 economists polled said the UK was threatened by a fiscal crisis that could derail any revival.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That's almost certainly true: but belief that the causation of the crisis is as Davies and Gieve suggest does not follow.  Indeed as the FT notes at the very end of the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But economists were divided over what to do about the threat of a fiscal crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Half of those polled backed the Conservatives&rsquo; view that action to cut spending and increase taxes was needed urgently in 2010. Half warned that such rapid reduction in borrowing would undermine the recovery.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Which rather proves the whole tone of the article by the FT was horribly biased.<\/p>\n<p>No surprise there though.<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"ft-story-body\">\n<div id=\"floating-target\" class=\"clearfix\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FT.com \/ UK \/ Economy &amp; Trade &#8211; UK deficit warning from City economists.
