{"id":51325,"date":"2020-07-07T07:07:37","date_gmt":"2020-07-07T06:07:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=51325"},"modified":"2020-07-07T07:10:38","modified_gmt":"2020-07-07T06:10:38","slug":"sunak-offers-3-billion-for-the-green-economy-when-100bn-is-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2020\/07\/07\/sunak-offers-3-billion-for-the-green-economy-when-100bn-is-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunak offers \u00c2\u00a33 billion for the green economy when \u00c2\u00a3100bn is needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2020\/jul\/06\/chancellor-set-to-announce-3bn-green-investment-package?utm_term=RWRpdG9yaWFsX0d1YXJkaWFuVG9kYXlVS19XZWVrZGF5cy0yMDA3MDc%3D&amp;utm_source=esp&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;CMP=GTUK_email&amp;utm_campaign=GuardianTodayUK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guardian notes<\/a> this morning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rishi Sunak is to announce a \u00a33bn package of green investment to decarbonise public buildings and cut emissions from Britain\u2019s poorly insulated homes as part of the government\u2019s\u00a0Covid-19\u00a0economic recovery plan.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They add:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The chancellor will seek to use Wednesday\u2019s summer statement on the economy to fend off criticism that his proposals lack ambition by insisting that he can \u201ckick start\u201d an environment-friendly revival through the creation of thousands of green jobs in the construction industry.<\/p>\n<p>Sunak will say that the extra money for decarbonising houses, schools, hospitals, prisons and military bases will help the UK meet its target of being a carbon net zero economy by 2050, and is likely to say that further green spending will be announced later in the year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is pathetic. And it shows that we really are in deep trouble.<\/p>\n<p>There is near-universal agreement that we are heading for mass unemployment in the UK, on a scale that almost no one now alive has seen in their lifetimes.<\/p>\n<p>And there is almost unanimous agreement that whatever threat coronavirus created it is but nothing compared to what is to come from the environmental and biodiversity crises that we face.<\/p>\n<p>I estimate it will cost \u00a3100bn a year for a decade to address this issue. And I have shown how to fund that.<\/p>\n<p>And Sunak thinks \u00a33bn will keep anyone happy? This is a pinprick. It will not deliver even a tiny percentage of the jobs that will be required.
