{"id":45337,"date":"2019-06-18T09:32:05","date_gmt":"2019-06-18T08:32:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=45337"},"modified":"2019-06-18T09:32:05","modified_gmt":"2019-06-18T08:32:05","slug":"kpmg-hit-another-low-as-this-time-theyre-fined-for-cheating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2019\/06\/18\/kpmg-hit-another-low-as-this-time-theyre-fined-for-cheating\/","title":{"rendered":"KPMG hit another low as this time they&#8217;re fined for cheating"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c6f028c2-910e-11e9-aea1-2b1d33ac3271?segmentId=778a3b31-0eac-c57a-a529-d296f5da8125\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FT has reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>KPMG [in the USA] has agreed to pay $50m to settle claims that it went back to alter audits it had already completed, after using stolen data from a watchdog that revealed they were about to be inspected.<\/p>\n<p>The Securities and Exchange Commission\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/news\/press-release\/2019-95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/news\/press-release\/2019-95&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1560929585967000&amp;usg=AFQjCNElYOwx7-HHqG-Z7TeryKevLOEUvg\">announced on Monday<\/a>\u00a0it had charged the company with changing past audit work ahead of inspections by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board.<\/p>\n<p>The SEC also found that numerous KPMG audit professionals had cheated on internal training exams by sharing answers and manipulating test results.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Many of the recent audit scandals involving KPMG and other firms have been about incompetence and neglectfulness, no doubt driven by a profit motive. This, though, is quite different.
