Patisserie Valerie\u2019s former finance director has been arrested on suspicion of fraud.<\/p>\n<p>David Dunckley, chief executive of Grant Thornton, which was replaced by RSM as the chain\u2019s auditor in mid-January, told MPs on the business, energy and industrial strategy committee that there was an \u201cexpectation gap\u201d that \u201cneeds to be fixed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not looking for fraud, we\u2019re not looking at the future, we\u2019re not giving a statement that the accounts are correct,\u201d he said, adding that his firm audits 7,000 companies. \u201cWe are saying [the accounts are] reasonable, we are looking in the past and we are not set up to look for fraud.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"dfp-ad--inline1\" class=\"js-ad-slot ad-slot ad-slot--inline ad-slot--inline1 ad-slot--rendered\" data-link-name=\"ad slot inline1\" data-name=\"inline1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-mobile=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|300,274|fluid\" data-desktop=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|620,1|620,350|300,274|fluid\" data-google-query-id=\"CP-jpL-mluACFReH7Qod6FMDhw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/59666047\/theguardian.com\/business\/article\/ng_7__container__\" class=\"ad-slot__content\">Well, I have news for David Dunckley. He's wrong. The point is simple. If Dunckley is right then ISA 240 is wrong to say the auditor has a duty to detect misstatement\u00a0by fraud. But they do say that. So it's Dunckley who is wrong.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>And that's not his only\u00a0mistake.
