{"id":42637,"date":"2018-08-01T08:40:43","date_gmt":"2018-08-01T07:40:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=42637"},"modified":"2018-08-01T08:40:43","modified_gmt":"2018-08-01T07:40:43","slug":"labour-universal-basic-income-and-a-job-guarantee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2018\/08\/01\/labour-universal-basic-income-and-a-job-guarantee\/","title":{"rendered":"Labour,  universal basic income and a job guarantee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>John McDonnell, the Shadow Chancellor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politicshome.com\/news\/uk\/economy\/economic-growth\/news\/97327\/labour-set-universal-basic-income-manifesto-pledge-john?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=MON-FRI%20Breakfast%20Briefing%20%20Events%20box%20copy&amp;utm_content=MON-FRI%20Breakfast%20Briefing%20%20Events%20box%20copy+CID_c648e09cb2c27c3abf026927bc1021a2&amp;utm_source=Email%20newsletters&amp;utm_term=Labour%20set%20for%20universal%20basic%20income%20manifesto%20pledge%20John%20McDonnell%20reveals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has apparently decided<\/a> that the next Labour manifesto should include a commitment to Universal Basic Income (UBI) even though, as yet, no figures are available to support the proposal in the UK, and no data from previous trials has proven whether the system will work, or not.<\/p>\n<p>I find the announcement a challenge.\u00a0 I have in my time argued for UBI.\u00a0 If I was now given a choice between Labour adopting modern monetary theory, with a job guarantee attached,\u00a0 or a universal basic income I\u00a0 believe that modern monetary theory with a job guarantee would be more important,\u00a0 more realistic,\u00a0 more likely to deliver,\u00a0 and more acceptable to voters.<\/p>\n<p>I can see value in a UBI.
