{"id":39458,"date":"2017-11-15T07:52:42","date_gmt":"2017-11-15T07:52:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=39458"},"modified":"2017-11-15T07:52:42","modified_gmt":"2017-11-15T07:52:42","slug":"the-isle-of-man-denies-its-subsidised-by-the-uk-without-ever-addressing-the-issues-i-have-raised","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2017\/11\/15\/the-isle-of-man-denies-its-subsidised-by-the-uk-without-ever-addressing-the-issues-i-have-raised\/","title":{"rendered":"The Isle of Man denies it&#8217;s subsidised by the UK without ever addressing the issues I have raised"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It's a bit over a week <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2017\/11\/06\/the-isle-of-man-is-still-being-subsidised-by-the-uk-to-be-a-tax-haven\/\">since I raised the issue of the Isle of Man's continuing subsidy from the UK<\/a> to be a tax haven.<\/p>\n<p>Since then the issue has been addressed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2017\/nov\/07\/uk-isle-of-man-subsidy-tax-haven-common-purse-payments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the Guardian<\/a> and in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2017\/11\/08\/the-case-against-subsidising-the-isle-of-man-to-be-a-tax-haven-goes-to-the-house-of-commons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House of Commons adjournment debate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today there is an excellent review of the Isle of Man and its tax practices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2017\/nov\/14\/after-successive-offshore-scandals-are-there-signs-of-change-in-isle-of-man?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Gmail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the Guardian today<\/a>. I recommend it, not least for the revelations about the sheer nastiest of the place.<\/p>\n<p>As interesting is the response in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iomtoday.co.im\/article.cfm?id=36954&amp;headline=Trouble%20in%20Paradise%20for%20our%20VAT%20deal?&amp;sectionIs=news&amp;searchyear=2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isle of Man Today<\/a>. The ritual rebuttal is offered:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a statement, the Manx Treasury said: \u2019The Isle of Man is not being subsidised by the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u2019FERSA is in place to ensure the Isle of Man and the UK get their fair share of the revenues they collect for each other.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Except they don't.
