The\u00a0Tax Justice Network conference, taking place today and tomorrow, is focussing on the issue of corruption, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxjustice.net\/topics\/inequality-democracy\/corruption\/\" target=\"_blank\">which it defines as follows<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Corruption is the abuse of public interest and the undermining of public confidence in the integrity of rules, systems and institutions that promote the public interest.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This definition is broader than those offered by the likes of Transparency International, who suggest it is \u201c<a class=\"broken_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.transparency.org\/news_room\/faq\/corruption_faq%22%20%5Cl%20%22faqcorr1%22%20%5Ct%20%22_blank\">the misuse of entrusted power for private gain<\/a>\u201d or the World Bank\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www1.worldbank.org\/publicsector\/anticorrupt\/corruptn\/cor02.htm\">the abuse of public office for private gain<\/a>\u201d. This is important. These very narrow definitions are themselves usually interpreted quite narrowly. What we need is a much broader perspective on this issue and in the context of May 12 this is vital: unless the definitions used are appropriate the outcomes of that conference will be inadequate.<\/p>\n<p>I confess I am not confident that the appropriate\u00a0 definition will be used, and would suggest that if it is not that will, in itself, be a form of corruption.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On May 12 the World Corruption Summit will take place in London.
