{"id":29438,"date":"2015-06-21T17:41:35","date_gmt":"2015-06-21T16:41:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=29438"},"modified":"2015-06-21T17:41:35","modified_gmt":"2015-06-21T16:41:35","slug":"could-uk-and-us-squabbling-on-international-tax-reform-just-be-an-agreed-ruse-to-kill-the-whole-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2015\/06\/21\/could-uk-and-us-squabbling-on-international-tax-reform-just-be-an-agreed-ruse-to-kill-the-whole-thing\/","title":{"rendered":"Could UK and US squabbling on international tax reform just be an agreed ruse to kill the whole thing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2015\/jun\/21\/us-official-british-government-undermined-progress-tax-avoidance\" target=\"_blank\">the Guardian has reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Britain has been attacked by a senior US official for undermining progress on a global clampdown on tax avoidance by multinationals ahead of an international agreement to be published at the G20 talks in the autumn.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Before going further, let's be clear that the US <a href=\"http:\/\/uncounted.org\/2015\/06\/15\/the-politics-of-country-by-country-reporting\/\" target=\"_blank\">has tried to strangle\u00a0country-by-country reporting at birth<\/a>, and so has nothing to shout about here, but I still believe the accusation made, which seem to focus on Osborne's\u00a0petty UK national politicking which led to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2014\/12\/10\/the-diverted-profits-tax-first-thoughts\/\" target=\"_blank\">wholly unnecessary diverted profits tax<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On this the Observer adds that it has:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>spoken to a senior official in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, given responsibility by the G20 for organising the talks on global agreements, who confirmed that some of the UK\u2019s moves had been \u201cunhelpful\u201d and that UK diplomats had \u201cpushed back\u201d against initiatives, leading to less progress being made.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I've had those same conversations, probably with those same people.<\/p>\n<p>What are the conclusions?
