{"id":29121,"date":"2015-05-23T07:50:14","date_gmt":"2015-05-23T06:50:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=29121"},"modified":"2015-05-23T07:47:35","modified_gmt":"2015-05-23T06:47:35","slug":"amazons-going-to-pay-uk-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2015\/05\/23\/amazons-going-to-pay-uk-tax\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon&#8217;s going to pay UK tax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the Guardian reports, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2015\/may\/23\/amazon-to-begin-paying-corporation-tax-on-uk-retail-sales\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon is going to pay UK tax<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<span style=\"color: #333333; font-family: 'Guardian Text Egyptian Web', Georgia, serif; font-size: medium; line-height: 24px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;\">Amazon has become the first technology company to abandon controversial corporate structures that divert sales and profits away from UK in the face of a clampdown imposed by George Osborne.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>George Osborne is going to claim this is because of his Diverted Profits Tax.<\/p>\n<p>I argue it is because of EU investigations and the OECD's BEPS programme.<\/p>\n<p>And the truth is we will never know for sure.<\/p>\n<p>But what we can say is that this would not have happened without:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The tax justice movement<\/li>\n<li>UK Uncut<\/li>\n<li>Union backed campaigns&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Margaret Hodge<\/li>\n<li>Investigative journalism&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Those are certain. We should celebrate this as a victory whilst still noting that:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>We still need a proper general anti-avoidance principle to beat this type of abuse for good, because that would be much better than the diverted profits tax<\/li>\n<li>Full country-by-country reporting on public record<\/li>\n<li>The completion and implementation of the BEPS project<\/li>\n<li>Total reform of corporation tax internationally, including a unitary tax base&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>But for now let's just note that Amazon said it could not sell to UK customers from a UK company. That, it said, was logistically impossible. Oddly that does not now seem to be the case.
