In the absence of evidence let&#8217;s call them bankers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article-header\">\n<div id=\"main-article-info\">\n<p itemprop=\"name headline  \">Nick Cohen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2014\/aug\/03\/why-do-we-still-honour-free-market-intellectuals-northern-rock\" target=\"_blank\">has asked in the Observer<\/a> 'Why do we still honour free-market intellectuals?', adding 'It's mystifying that the former chairman of Northern Rock is still garnering plaudits'<\/p>\n<p>His curiosity is justified, and caused by\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">the Institute of Economic Affairs\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iea.org.uk\/in-the-media\/press-release\/matt-ridley-wins-iea-free-enterprise-award\">presenting its annual free enterprise award to\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0The Right Hon Matthew, 5th Viscount Ridley last month. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iea.org.uk\/in-the-media\/press-release\/matt-ridley-wins-iea-free-enterprise-award\" target=\"_blank\">IEA\u00a0<\/a><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iea.org.uk\/in-the-media\/press-release\/matt-ridley-wins-iea-free-enterprise-award\" target=\"_blank\">citation<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0referred to Ridley's 'writings for\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">The Times<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0and his insight into critical issues such as the regulation of the UK economy, energy policy and inequality'. As\u00a0<\/span>Cohen<span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0<\/span>pointed out, it failed to\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0mention his role as\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0chairman of Northern Rock from 2004 to 2007. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em;\">Cohen<\/span>\u00a0is perplexed that any organisation should wish to give an award for their contribution to free enterprise to the person who chaired the first bank in the UK to suffer a run for more than a century. \u00a0I confess, I am not at all surprised that they have done so.<\/p>\n<p>Let's ignore for a moment that the Institute of Economic Affairs \u00a0has always been at the forefront in purveying Hayek's bizarre worldview, and let's also ignore for a moment that this was the favourite think tank of Margaret Thatcher. Let's even ignore the inflated status that it gives to its director, Mark Littlewood, who is the only person I know who persistently greets me by the title 'Comrade'. Instead let's \u00a0note instead that the IEA never discloses who funds its activities such as its commitment to transparency, \u00a0and then let's presume that those who might provide its resources are the very same people who \u00a0were both the architects of and beneficiaries from the downfall of the British economy that resulted from the banking crash of 2007\/08. Let's call them bankers.
