{"id":24300,"date":"2014-03-06T06:01:36","date_gmt":"2014-03-06T06:01:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=24300"},"modified":"2014-03-06T06:01:36","modified_gmt":"2014-03-06T06:01:36","slug":"the-irony-japan-wants-to-tax-bitcoins-just-as-the-uk-says-it-wont","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2014\/03\/06\/the-irony-japan-wants-to-tax-bitcoins-just-as-the-uk-says-it-wont\/","title":{"rendered":"The irony: Japan wants to tax Bitcoins just as the UK says it won&#8217;t"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/855e749e-a443-11e3-9cb0-00144feab7de.html?ftcamp=crm\/email\/201435\/nbe\/InTodaysFT\/product&amp;siteedition=uk#axzz2v9v26VIQ\" target=\"_blank\"> FT has a headline this morning that says<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Japan considers tax on Bitcoin transactions as part of crackdown<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is one good reason for Japan wanting to do this: it has come to the apparent conclusion that Bitcoin is a commodity used for speculative purposes and not primarily as a currency <a title=\"HMRC duck most of the big issues on the taxation of Bitcoins\" href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2014\/03\/04\/hmrc-duck-most-of-the-big-issues-on-the-taxation-of-bitcoins\/\">just as the UK has come to the reverse (incorrect, I think) conclusion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Japan also wants to impose a tax after the collapse of two Bitcoin exchanges within days of each other leading to the loss of significant numbers of the supposedly always traceable currency, giving a lie to its supposed transparent quality for crime-beating purposes and to its merit as a regulation free zone. Tax, it is thought by Japan, would help impose that regulation.<\/p>\n<p>It looks like HMRC made the wrong decision at the wrong time.
