{"id":23560,"date":"2013-12-30T08:25:27","date_gmt":"2013-12-30T08:25:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=23560"},"modified":"2013-12-30T08:25:27","modified_gmt":"2013-12-30T08:25:27","slug":"britain-needs-a-wage-rise-the-big-economic-demand-for-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2013\/12\/30\/britain-needs-a-wage-rise-the-big-economic-demand-for-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain needs a wage rise &#8211; the big economic demand for 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2013\/dec\/30\/pay-workers-more-cbi-firms\" target=\"_blank\">Guardian has published this map this morning<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/static.guim.co.uk\/sys-images\/Guardian\/Pix\/pictures\/2013\/12\/30\/1388362766086\/RealPayFallWEB.png\" width=\"460\" height=\"381\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It's a depressing tale of why the UK is in an effective recession and full marks to the GMB for presenting its case so well.<\/p>\n<p>The reality is that, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2013\/dec\/29\/why-britain-needs-pay-rise\" target=\"_blank\">as Larry Elliott argues this morning<\/a>, there will be no real recovery in the UK without real wage increases.<\/p>\n<p>Even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2013\/dec\/30\/pay-workers-more-cbi-firms\" target=\"_blank\">John Cridland at the CBI<\/a> now agrees. It's good to see that he does. It's a case <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tuc.org.uk\/britain-needs-pay-rise\" target=\"_blank\">that the TUC has been arguing<\/a> for some time. It so happens to be the basis for Ed Miliband's whole pre-election strategy.<\/p>\n<p>And it's right. Long ago Henry Ford realised that he would not sell cars in the mass market if his own workers could not afford to buy them. Now I suspect we have supermarket workers dependent on food banks whilst profits go on rising.<\/p>\n<p>If 2014 is to deliver prosperity for all then the GMB, Larry Elliott, the CBI, TUC and Labour are right: Britain needs a wage rise.
