{"id":23245,"date":"2013-12-02T07:37:59","date_gmt":"2013-12-02T07:37:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=23245"},"modified":"2013-12-02T07:37:59","modified_gmt":"2013-12-02T07:37:59","slug":"when-the-eu-is-the-peacemaker-worth-fighting-for-uk-politicians-have-a-duty-to-stand-back-and-reflect-a-little-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2013\/12\/02\/when-the-eu-is-the-peacemaker-worth-fighting-for-uk-politicians-have-a-duty-to-stand-back-and-reflect-a-little-more\/","title":{"rendered":"When the EU is the peacemaker worth fighting for UK politicians have a duty to stand back and reflect a little more"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I've read with sorrow reports of rioting in the Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>That sorrow has been tinged with respect for the fact that people will still come out onto the streets at risk to themselves to demand freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst I believe the EU a flawed institution in need of reform I am pleased it can offer people hope - hope enough to take risk for.<\/p>\n<p>And in that case I saddened to even greater degree by those in the UK who treat it with contempt.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever else the EU has done - and I stress, it is not all good - it has upheld a great many freedoms, many of which are important. And the result is that it has also upheld peace. We turn our back on that at our peril.<\/p>\n<p>What we have to do is make it work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve read with sorrow reports of rioting in the Ukraine.
