{"id":22517,"date":"2013-09-28T16:34:40","date_gmt":"2013-09-28T15:34:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=22517"},"modified":"2013-09-28T16:34:40","modified_gmt":"2013-09-28T15:34:40","slug":"the-marriage-allowance-will-cost-more-than-the-bedroom-tax-saves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2013\/09\/28\/the-marriage-allowance-will-cost-more-than-the-bedroom-tax-saves\/","title":{"rendered":"The marriage allowance will cost more than the bedroom tax saves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-24308889\" target=\"_blank\">the BBC have reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Prime Minister, David Cameron, has confirmed that the government will bring in a tax break for married couples before the next election in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The proposals suggest that around four million couples could benefit from a \u00a31,000 transferable tax allowance from 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Under the scheme, married couples on basic rate tax pay as well as around 15,000 couples in civil partnerships, would be eligible to claim this tax allowance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0So, that's near enough 4 million at \u00a3200 - because a \u00a31,000 transferable allowance is not worth \u00a31,000, it's worth the tax on it - which is \u00a3200.<\/p>\n<p>And that comes to \u00a3800 million that this might cost. But let's be generous - some won't claim it (most likely those on low income). So maybe it will only really cost \u00a3600 million.<\/p>\n<p>The bedroom <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.channel4.com\/factcheck\/factcheck-cameron-slips-up-on-bedroom-tax\/12962\" target=\"_blank\">tax is estimated to affect 660,000 people in the UK - two thirds of whom have a disability<\/a>.
