{"id":22093,"date":"2013-09-09T07:56:34","date_gmt":"2013-09-09T06:56:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=22093"},"modified":"2013-09-09T07:56:34","modified_gmt":"2013-09-09T06:56:34","slug":"big-company-tax-investigations-yield-less-cash-and-hmrc-arent-offering-the-real-reasons-for-the-decline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2013\/09\/09\/big-company-tax-investigations-yield-less-cash-and-hmrc-arent-offering-the-real-reasons-for-the-decline\/","title":{"rendered":"Big company tax investigations yield less cash, and HMRC aren&#8217;t offering the real reasons for the decline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/6b5574c8-171f-11e3-9ec2-00144feabdc0.html#ixzz2eNN9rMUM\" target=\"_blank\">FT notes this morning<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">The amount of additional corporation tax collected through investigations into Britain\u2019s largest businesses has fallen to its lowest level since 2006-07, according to data which show that inquiries into some of the UK\u2019s 770 biggest companies yielded just over \u00a33bn in the year to March.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-track-pos=\"0\">All the usual excuses are rolled out from HMRC before it is noted that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The large-business service, which deals with the 770 largest businesses, collected an extra \u00a33.17bn in tax in 2012-13, an 8 per cent drop from \u00a33.44bn the year before \u2014 and a 25 per cent drop on 2010-11. Extra revenue gained from challenging large businesses over how much corporation tax they pay peaked at \u00a34.1bn in 2010-11.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let me suggest the two real reasons for the change.<\/p>\n<p>The first is a lack of resources.<\/p>\n<p>The second is a lack of political will: <a title=\"The UK: open to business from tax abusers keen to take Osborne\u2019s bribes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2013\/09\/09\/the-uk-open-to-business-from-tax-abusers-keen-to-take-osbornes-bribes\/\" target=\"_blank\">you can't run a tax haven<\/a> and then frighten business away by being aggressive.<\/p>\n<p>Oddly, neither are mentioned by\u00a0HM Revenue &amp; Customs in the explanations they provided to the FT.
