{"id":20944,"date":"2013-05-22T06:59:46","date_gmt":"2013-05-22T05:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=20944"},"modified":"2013-05-22T06:59:46","modified_gmt":"2013-05-22T05:59:46","slug":"tax-lost-offshore-could-end-world-poverty-says-oxfam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2013\/05\/22\/tax-lost-offshore-could-end-world-poverty-says-oxfam\/","title":{"rendered":"Tax lost offshore could end world poverty, says Oxfam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oxfam has issued a new report today that suggests:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">People using tax havens are depriving the world of more than $150 billion (\u00a3100bn) in lost revenue, enough money to end extreme poverty twice over<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">As the add:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">A high proportion of this tax dodging is taking place on David Cameron and George Osborne\u2019s watch. Of the $18.47 trillion (\u00a312tn) that Oxfam estimates is being held by individuals in tax havens around the globe, over a third \u2014 $7.18 trillion (\u00a34.7tn) - is sitting in accounts in British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies. Despite the fact a deal was done earlier this month to get some of these tax havens to be more transparent and share tax information, as it stands there will be no benefit whatsoever for poor countries, who are struggling to reclaim the billions of pounds they are owed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">The international agency said it is a moral outrage and a scandal that this is taking desperately needed cash from poor countries as well as from citizens who are being hit by austerity measures closer to home.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The estimates are, I\u00a0understand, based on Bank for International\u00a0Settlement\u00a0data. The resulting estimate of offshore assets is as a result, inevitably, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxjustice.net\/cms\/upload\/pdf\/Price_of_Offshore_Revisited_120722.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">less than the\u00a0Tax Justice Network estimate <\/a>of between $21 trillion and \u00a332 trillion because we included a\u00a0broader\u00a0range of estimates and a broader\u00a0calculation\u00a0base.\u00a0However, the two are, given that, consistent with each other.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">As Emma Seery, Oxfam\u2019s Head of Development Finance and Public Services, has said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">These figures put the UK at the centre of a global tax system that is a colossal betrayal of people here and in the poorest countries who are struggling to get by, and put the government on the side of the privileged few. If they want to get on the right side of this debate, now is the time to take action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">Britain\u2019s credibility is on the line; talking tough on tax, whilst continuing to usher a third of the world\u2019s wealth into UK tax havens, risks making a mockery of David Cameron\u2019s leadership at the G8 Summit in June.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">She was right to add:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">David Cameron and George Osborne continue to tour the world making promises to clamp down on tax havens, but so far they\u2019ve done absolutely nothing to make tax deals work for poor countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: small;\">The UK and Europe cannot stand by and watch more people fall victim to the bite of austerity whilst billions is lost from the public purse on their watch.
