Such behaviour demonstrates not exceptionally high business talent but exceptionally low corporate ethics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I agree. A also agree with this, from the same article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There are ... lessons for governments of the G8: collectively they must take responsibility for the web of corporate opacity that has enabled such practices. Unreasonable resource extraction contracts have been kept secret, as have payments made by companies to public authorities and officials. Intra-company transactions have been unsupervised and so became the vehicle for tax avoidance. Beneficial ownership of shell companies has been kept secret and so became the vehicle for laundering bribes. If Africa is to harness the coming decade of extraction to finance its development these practices must now be ended. Britain\u2019s G8 summit next month aims to do just that.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, let me turn to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/news\/datablog\/2013\/may\/12\/ftse-100-use-tax-havens-full-list\" target=\"_blank\">Action Aid \/ Guardian report on tax haven subsidiaries of\u00a0multinational corporations<\/a>, published today. Who is right up there, near the op of the charts? A host of extractive industry\u00a0companies:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Screen-shot-2013-05-13-at-07.20.23.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-20704\" alt=\"Screen shot 2013-05-13 at 07.20.23\" src=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Screen-shot-2013-05-13-at-07.20.23.png\" width=\"592\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Screen-shot-2013-05-13-at-07.20.23.png 658w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Screen-shot-2013-05-13-at-07.20.23-300x269.png 300w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Screen-shot-2013-05-13-at-07.20.23-250x225.png 250w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Screen-shot-2013-05-13-at-07.20.23-334x300.png 334w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Screen-shot-2013-05-13-at-07.20.23-146x132.png 146w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 592px) 100vw, 592px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Let's not presume this problem exists amongst some unknown companies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Let's think it widespread. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/uk\/2013\/may\/12\/uk-companies-condemned-tax-havens\" target=\"_blank\">As the Guardian also notes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For instance, Tullow Oil, which describes itself as \"Africa's leading independent oil company\" draws 84% of its revenues from the continent, but only four of the 81 companies it lists as subsidiaries are registered in African countries.
