{"id":20477,"date":"2013-05-02T07:15:12","date_gmt":"2013-05-02T06:15:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=20477"},"modified":"2013-05-02T07:15:12","modified_gmt":"2013-05-02T06:15:12","slug":"i-think-hmrc-should-realise-that-in-all-things-to-do-with-tax-telling-the-truth-pays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2013\/05\/02\/i-think-hmrc-should-realise-that-in-all-things-to-do-with-tax-telling-the-truth-pays\/","title":{"rendered":"I think HMRC should realise that in all things to do with tax telling the truth pays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/33a4e02a-b272-11e2-8540-00144feabdc0.html#ixzz2S71ciCgr\" target=\"_blank\">FT has reported<\/a>, possibly in the context of the <a title=\"HMRC in the High Court over Goldman Sachs \u2018Sweetheart\u2019 tax deal\" href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2013\/05\/02\/hmrc-in-the-high-court-over-goldman-sachs-sweetheart-tax-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\">UK UNcut legal action<\/a> today:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>HM Revenue &amp; Customs has responded strongly over a leaked memo concerning\u00a0<a title=\"Anger in UK over \u00a34.5bn corporate tax deals - FT.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/b9b71ae2-b1a1-11e2-b324-00144feabdc0.html\">\u00a34.5bn of tax deals<\/a>\u00a0with big business, ahead of a High Court hearing on Thursday about the legality of a controversial settlement with Goldman Sachs.<\/p>\n<p>Lin Homer, permanent secretary of HMRC wrote to Margaret Hodge, chair of the public accounts committee defending the department\u2019s position after the leak of a memo that reportedly said that \u201c\u00a34.5bn\u00e2\u20ac\u2030.\u00e2\u20ac\u2030.\u00e2\u20ac\u2030.\u00e2\u20ac\u2030has come from just four settlements with bespoke governance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Homer said the reason the figure was larger than the \u00a33.6bn quoted in a\u00a0National Audit Office investigation\u00a0into the settlement of the four deals was that it factored in revenue flows resulting from the settlement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So what we now know is that HMRC understated the value of their sweetheart deals to parliament and are now in a panic about it.<\/p>\n<p>I think they will find that in all things to do with tax telling the truth pays.
