{"id":18771,"date":"2013-01-02T15:29:20","date_gmt":"2013-01-02T15:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=18771"},"modified":"2013-01-02T15:29:20","modified_gmt":"2013-01-02T15:29:20","slug":"the-eu-says-its-time-to-review-international-financial-reporting-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2013\/01\/02\/the-eu-says-its-time-to-review-international-financial-reporting-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"The EU says it&#8217;s time to review International Financial Reporting Standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The follwoing is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/newsbysector\/banksandfinance\/9774691\/European-Commission-to-review-dangerous-accounting-rules.html\" target=\"_blank\">very good news from the Telegraph<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>A review of the controversial International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) has been sanctioned by Commissioner Michel Barnier to start early this year, in what amounts to a major breakthrough in a long-running campaign supported by\u00a0<em>The Daily Telegraph<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>Investors from 10 leading groups \u2014 including Threadneedle Investments, the Co-Operative Asset Management, London Pension Fund Authority and Railpen \u2014 secretly wrote to Mr Barnier in October with a warning that the accounting rules were harming shareholders, and destabilising banks and the economy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The group also wrote to Vince Cable, the Business Secretary, but, since previous warnings to the Coalition and the London-based International Accounting Standards Board had gone unanswered, they appealed directly for help from Brussels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>Replying in a letter to the investors, Olivier Guersent, the head of Mr Barnier\u2019s cabinet, wrote that he \u201cshared the concerns\u201d of investors over IFRS.
