{"id":17526,"date":"2012-09-28T10:02:51","date_gmt":"2012-09-28T09:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=17526"},"modified":"2012-09-28T10:02:51","modified_gmt":"2012-09-28T09:02:51","slug":"if-theres-this-much-money-to-be-had-from-tackling-tax-evasion-why-wont-hmrc-go-for-it-nationwide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/09\/28\/if-theres-this-much-money-to-be-had-from-tackling-tax-evasion-why-wont-hmrc-go-for-it-nationwide\/","title":{"rendered":"If there&#8217;s this much money to be had from tackling tax evasion why won&#8217;t HMRC go for it nationwide?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HMRC is very proud to announce\u00a0initiatives\u00a0these days - very small\u00a0targeted\u00a0programmes trying to tackle tax evasion in limited sectors in limited areas. <a href=\"http:\/\/hmrc.presscentre.com\/Press-Releases\/Legal-profession-targeted-in-tax-cheat-crackdown-68035.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">The latest was\u00a0announced\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The sectors\u00a0targeted, places where theuy're to be\u00a0targeted\u00a0and expected yields are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Legal profession in London \u2014 expected yield \u00a33m<\/li>\n<li>Grocery and retail in South and North Wales, the North West of England and the South West of England - expected yield \u00a33.75m<\/li>\n<li>Hair and beauty in the North East of England - expected yield \u00a33.75m<\/li>\n<li>Restaurants in the South East of England and the Solent - expected yield \u00a32.5m<\/li>\n<li>The motor trade in Scotland - expected yield \u00a33m<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now if Hair &amp; Beauty in the north east (for example) can\u00a0yield\u00a0so much the simple question is this: why not tackle it nationwide? Instead of sacking staff around the country why isn't HMRC taking them on to beat the curse of tax evasion?<\/p>\n<p>If the activity yields revenue it makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>It helps close the deficit.<\/p>\n<p>It provides employment when there are no jobs available.<\/p>\n<p>And most importantly, it provides a level playing field for honest businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Why won't the\u00a0government\u00a0permit the glaringly obvious use of public money to raise public\u00a0money?
