{"id":17250,"date":"2012-09-11T09:24:18","date_gmt":"2012-09-11T08:24:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=17250"},"modified":"2012-09-11T09:25:04","modified_gmt":"2012-09-11T08:25:04","slug":"lesson-from-barclays-companies-dont-have-a-duty-to-minimise-their-tax-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/09\/11\/lesson-from-barclays-companies-dont-have-a-duty-to-minimise-their-tax-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"Lessons from Barclays: companies don&#8217;t have a duty to minimise their tax bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Barclays\u00a0<a title=\"Barclays admits its tax products were \u201cinappropriate\u201d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/09\/11\/barclays-admits-its-tax-products-were-inappropriate\/\">has decided to review its sales of tax products<\/a>\u00a0as \u201csome of them may no longer be appropriate\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As I've already noted, there are lessons to be learned from this.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/09\/11\/lessons-from-barclays-tax-avoidance-does-not-pay\/\" target=\"_blank\"> The first <\/a>was that, as Barclays has now learned to its cost, tax avoidance does not pay.<\/p>\n<p>The second could be described as the inverse of that first lesson: it is that tax avoidance is not profit maximising behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I've said that for a long time, but it's really important that a company like Barclays has realised it. This shatters, forever, the myth that it is the directors duty to minimise tax bills: it is not and Barclays are saying it is not.
