{"id":17088,"date":"2012-09-02T09:41:11","date_gmt":"2012-09-02T08:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=17088"},"modified":"2012-09-02T09:41:11","modified_gmt":"2012-09-02T08:41:11","slug":"the-tories-are-bankrupting-government-and-society-will-fall-with-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/09\/02\/the-tories-are-bankrupting-government-and-society-will-fall-with-it\/","title":{"rendered":"The Tories are bankrupting government &#8211; and society will fall with it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/society\/2012\/sep\/01\/council-reserves-will-run-dry\" target=\"_blank\">Observer notes this morning<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The economic crisis engulfing the coalition deepened after the Tory head of\u00a0local government\u00a0raised the spectre of councils across England and Wales running out of cash reserves used to boost local economies within five years, under the weight of massive spending cuts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is not chance: this is\u00a0deliberate. As I argued in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.searchingfinance.com\/products\/soon-to-be-published\/the-courageous-state-rethinking-economics-society-and-the-role-of-government.html\" target=\"_blank\">The\u00a0Courageous State<\/a>, the Tories seek power to destroy the value\u00a0government\u00a0provides. That is what they are doing here.\u00a0Even\u00a0their own members in local\u00a0government\u00a0now realise that what the Tories at Westminster are doing will destroy local authorities in the UK, leaving those\u00a0authorities\u00a0to go bankrupt. That will in turn \u00a0undermine\u00a0education, social services, transport,\u00a0environmental\u00a0provision\u00a0and much lese in local\u00a0communities\u00a0throughout\u00a0the UK.<\/p>\n<p>All of this is foreseeable. In that case it is deliberate. The intent is to destroy democratic\u00a0government\u00a0itself of which local\u00a0authorities\u00a0form a key part.<\/p>\n<p>When will people realise just how dangerous this is to the very\u00a0fabric\u00a0of our society, which will be torn apart by such policies?<\/p>\n<p>And when will they also realise that without functioning and\u00a0effective\u00a0government\u00a0the chance of ever creating wealth in\u00a0this\u00a0country will be undermined for\u00a0generations\u00a0to come?<\/p>\n<p>Politics has not been this raw in our\u00a0country\u00a0for\u00a0generations: we are quite\u00a0literally\u00a0facing\u00a0the\u00a0destruction of the whole fabric on which\u00a0our\u00a0society\u00a0is based. And that means we all have a choice to accept this destruction of our democracy or fight it.
