{"id":16822,"date":"2012-08-08T21:26:46","date_gmt":"2012-08-08T20:26:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=16822"},"modified":"2012-08-08T21:26:46","modified_gmt":"2012-08-08T20:26:46","slug":"not-all-critics-of-uk-banking-are-holding-their-fire-tonight-or-so-im-told","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/08\/08\/not-all-critics-of-uk-banking-are-holding-their-fire-tonight-or-so-im-told\/","title":{"rendered":"Not all critics of UK banking are holding their fire tonight, or so I&#8217;m told"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/08\/09\/business\/global\/censure-of-standard-chartered-draws-harrumphs-in-london.html?pagewanted=2&amp;_r=2&amp;seid=auto&amp;smid=tw-nytimes\" target=\"_blank\">tonight on the Standard Chartered story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Not all critics of British banking, however, are holding their fire.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Mr. Murphy\u2019s blog.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/richard-murphy\/\">Richard Murphy<\/a>, a London-based authority on tax evasion and money laundering schemes, argues that the accusations against Standard Chartered \u2013 even if 99.9 percent of its practices prove to be within the bounds of American law \u2013 highlight an arrogant assumption on the part of British banks that they are immune to global rules of best banking conduct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what if a regulator is a bit of a lone wolf \u2013 that just shows he is independent,\u201d Mr. Murphy said of the New York banking regulator, Mr. Lawsky. \u201cThis shows that there is a deep worry that institutions in London are ignoring the obligations of other regulatory environments. It is a tax haven mentality, and the U.S. has had enough of it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That sounds like me.
