{"id":16674,"date":"2012-08-02T07:17:47","date_gmt":"2012-08-02T06:17:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=16674"},"modified":"2012-08-02T07:17:47","modified_gmt":"2012-08-02T06:17:47","slug":"why-has-it-taken-four-years-to-talk-about-nationalising-rbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/08\/02\/why-has-it-taken-four-years-to-talk-about-nationalising-rbs\/","title":{"rendered":"Why has it taken four years to talk about nationalising RBS?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/88db848e-dbd8-11e1-aba3-00144feab49a.html#ixzz22MmqHk7n\" target=\"_blank\">FT reports this morning that<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Senior government figures are discussing the possibility of buying out private investors in\u00a0Royal Bank of Scotland\u00a0and fully nationalising it amid mounting frustration at\u00a0banks\u2019 failure to lend to British businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Cabinet ministers are having conversations about whether to spend around \u00a35bn buying up the 18 per cent of the bank the government does not own, although George Osborne, the chancellor, is opposed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\u00a0Since it is an obviously good idea it is inevitable that Osborne is opposed. And somehow I suspect the senior government figures are in fact LibDems. But the real question is why has this taken so long? I discussed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2008\/10\/12\/a-strategy-for-our-nationalised-banks\/\" target=\"_blank\">this issue almost four years ago<\/a>.
