{"id":15969,"date":"2012-06-12T09:40:33","date_gmt":"2012-06-12T08:40:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=15969"},"modified":"2012-06-12T09:40:33","modified_gmt":"2012-06-12T08:40:33","slug":"putting-foxes-in-charge-of-the-chicken-run","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/06\/12\/putting-foxes-in-charge-of-the-chicken-run\/","title":{"rendered":"Putting foxes in charge of the chicken run"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The FT's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/b665b832-b3e9-11e1-a3db-00144feabdc0.html#ixzz1xZ8c8Mdb\" target=\"_blank\">reported this morning that<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One of the UK\u2019s most senior accountants will serve as the first non-executive chairman of the Financial Conduct Authority, the UK\u2019s new investor protection and markets regulator.<\/p>\n<p>John Griffith-Jones, KPMG\u2019s UK chairman, will join the board of the Financial Services Authority in September before heading the board of the FCA when it spins out as an independent agency next year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now let's think about what's been the biggest failure in investor protection in recent decades. I'd suggest it was the near collapse of the UK's banks in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Now who had the duty to report whether the banks were going to fail or not? Answer: their auditors did.<\/p>\n<p>And dd they do that? No! They absolutely\u00a0and\u00a0completely failed in their duty to do so. What's more - having completely failed to do so they then had the cheek to say they\u00a0hadn't warned that the banks were failing\u00a0because\u00a0they were sure they'd be bailed out, as if that excused them of their duty. <a href=\"http:\/\/retheauditors.com\/2010\/11\/28\/big-4-bombshell-we-didnt-fail-banks-because-they-were-getting-a-bailout\/\" target=\"_blank\">Francine McKenna covers that here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, the auditors of the banks,\u00a0including\u00a0KPMG, failed to report\u00a0what\u00a0was required of them to protect investors and\u00a0depositors\u00a0alike.<\/p>\n<p>And the reward?
