{"id":15787,"date":"2012-05-29T07:35:00","date_gmt":"2012-05-29T06:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=15787"},"modified":"2012-05-29T07:35:00","modified_gmt":"2012-05-29T06:35:00","slug":"note-to-bob-diamond-you-cant-shatter-a-reputation-that-is-already-in-tatters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/05\/29\/note-to-bob-diamond-you-cant-shatter-a-reputation-that-is-already-in-tatters\/","title":{"rendered":"Note to Bob Diamond: you can&#8217;t shatter a reputation that is already in tatters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/3f6359d4-a8e9-11e1-b085-00144feabdc0.html#ixzz1wEnsNmi4\" target=\"_blank\">FT notes this morning<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Bob Diamond, chief executive of Barclays, has accused the government of inflicting \u201cunnecessary damage\u201d on its reputation when it retrospectively outlawed a \u00a3300m tax deal in a move the bank says compromised taxpayer confidentiality.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Diamond attacked the government for the \u201ceffective naming\u201d of Barclays in the Treasury\u2019s statement to Parliament in February which described the bank\u2019s debt buyback arrangement as a \u201chighly abusive\u201d scheme.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to Andrew Tyrie, chairman of the Treasury select committee, Mr Diamond said the way the situation had been handled was \u201ccompletely unwarranted\u201d.
