{"id":15668,"date":"2012-05-22T06:46:29","date_gmt":"2012-05-22T05:46:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=15668"},"modified":"2012-05-22T06:46:29","modified_gmt":"2012-05-22T05:46:29","slug":"the-eu-takes-a-small-step-towards-a-green-new-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/05\/22\/the-eu-takes-a-small-step-towards-a-green-new-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"The EU takes a small step towards a Green New Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is from an \u00a0FT email this morning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Commonly-backed \u201cproject bonds\u201d pilot to fund pan-European infrastructure projects were approved by EU diplomats\u00a0on Monday and will be discussed\u00a0by EU leaders at a summit meeting on Wednesday,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/link.ft.com\/r\/G8OTZZ\/YB9GAI\/JIDB9\/30D2YD\/VLEKRD\/E4\/h?a=2012&amp;b=5&amp;c=22\" target=\"_blank\">reports the FT.<\/a>\u00a0The small trial,\u00a0the first element of a new \u201cgrowth compact\u201d, would see about\u00a0\u00e2\u201a\u00ac230m in EU funds allocated through 2013 to back the bonds, which would finance cross-border transport, communications and energy infrastructure programmes that are frequently ignored by individual member states. The plan is backed by French president Francois Hollande but documents seen by the FT suggest that the trial was original intended to run to 2015, but Germany requested a shorter trial.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I've been arguing for such bonds since 2003, and have done so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greennewdealgroup.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">through the Green New Deal since<\/a> 2008. It's a shame that they've taken so long to cotton on.<\/p>\n<p>And it's shame that the su is so small. I argue for \u00a320 billion of such\u00a0investment\u00a0in the UK alone a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2011\/07\/26\/the-alternative-economic-policy-we-need-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">nd discuss how to fund it here<\/a>.
