I produced the\u00a0following\u00a0graph from the data noted below it:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-11-at-08.57.03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15514\" title=\"Screen shot 2012-05-11 at 08.57.03\" src=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-11-at-08.57.03.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"764\" height=\"775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-11-at-08.57.03.png 764w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-11-at-08.57.03-295x300.png 295w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-11-at-08.57.03-96x96.png 96w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-11-at-08.57.03-24x24.png 24w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-11-at-08.57.03-36x36.png 36w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-11-at-08.57.03-48x48.png 48w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Screen-shot-2012-05-11-at-08.57.03-64x64.png 64w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 764px) 100vw, 764px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The number of companies increased over the period from 1,595,000 t0 2,629,900.<\/p>\n<p>The tax paid grew from \u00a332 billion to \u00a342 billion with some bumps on the way (and\u00a0especially\u00a0a dip in 2009-10).<\/p>\n<p>It's immediately possible to say that of course the amount of tax per company has gone down\u00a0because\u00a0the number of companies has gone up, but then so has to\u00a0proportion\u00a0of profits in GDP, so that doesn't quite stack, but I agree I need to do more on that issue.<\/p>\n<p>And it's also possible to say all the new companies were small - but then a 25% jump in\u00a0corporation\u00a0tax between 2004-05 and 2005-06 may well be very largely small company related as there was a rush to\u00a0incorporate\u00a0over the 0% tax fiasco, which was then withdrawn. So that doesn't really stack either - small companies do pay tax.<\/p>\n<p>And of course a lot of the new companies could be dormant.<\/p>\n<p>Or could it be that the fact that less than 1.2 million of those 2.6 million companies submit tax returns with maybe 700,000 a year ignoring the demand to do so might just explain the fall, coupled with the fact the Companies House has cut its staff by 25% and HMRC has done so by over 30% during this period? Could it be, in other words, that tax evasion explains the fall, and the fact that\u00a0corporation\u00a0tax is\u00a0now\u00a0becoming something of a voluntary payments donation box exercise rather than a serious exercise in taxing most businesses\u00a0might\u00a0explain the fall?<\/p>\n<p>I can't prove that on the basis of one graph. But it's a hypothesis. And there's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Documents\/500000Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">ample evidence to\u00a0support\u00a0it<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did a simple bit of research yesterday.
