{"id":15297,"date":"2012-04-27T11:23:49","date_gmt":"2012-04-27T10:23:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=15297"},"modified":"2012-04-27T11:23:49","modified_gmt":"2012-04-27T10:23:49","slug":"why-would-charities-not-want-more-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/04\/27\/why-would-charities-not-want-more-money\/","title":{"rendered":"Why would charities not want more money?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was bemused by most charities <a title=\"Thursday evening at the Oasis Centre, London \u2014 discussing charities and tax\" href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/04\/24\/thursday-evening-at-the-oasis-centre-london-discussing-charities-and-tax\/\">at the event I spoke at last night<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I <a title=\"Charities and tax \u2014 my suggested way forward\" href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/04\/26\/charities-and-tax-my-suggested-way-forward\/\">put forward a proposal that would increase the total funding for charity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They said they'r rather keep the lower\u00a0funding\u00a0wealthy\u00a0philanthropists\u00a0provide now.<\/p>\n<p>And they very emphatically did not want\u00a0government\u00a0match funding of all gifts instead of the\u00a0somewhat\u00a0lower amount that gift aid gives now because that, they said, would make that funding\u00a0government\u00a0spending\u00a0and subject therefore to\u00a0government\u00a0whim.<\/p>\n<p>Tax\u00a0relief\u00a0is\u00a0government\u00a0spending.<\/p>\n<p>And as the current\u00a0proposal\u00a0shows,\u00a0that\u00a0relief\u00a0is very much the subject of whim.<\/p>\n<p>Try as I might I could find no logic at all in the argument of those opposing my idea, and I was left with the feeling that all they want is the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>And <a title=\"Asking the right questions about charities\" href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/04\/27\/asking-the-right-questions-about-charities\/\">that's not what charities should desire<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was bemused by most charities at the event I spoke at last night.
