{"id":15214,"date":"2012-04-23T13:18:39","date_gmt":"2012-04-23T12:18:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=15214"},"modified":"2012-04-23T13:18:39","modified_gmt":"2012-04-23T12:18:39","slug":"if-the-tories-find-tax-avoidance-morally-repugnant-why-were-they-the-biggest-party-in-the-eu-parliament-to-reject-measures-designed-to-tackle-it-last-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/04\/23\/if-the-tories-find-tax-avoidance-morally-repugnant-why-were-they-the-biggest-party-in-the-eu-parliament-to-reject-measures-designed-to-tackle-it-last-week\/","title":{"rendered":"If the Tories find tax avoidance &#8216;morally repugnant&#8217; why were they the biggest party in the EU Parliament to reject measures designed to tackle it last week?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I've just looked at the <a title=\"The European Parliament officially adopts the Tax Justice Network agenda\" href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/04\/21\/the-european-parliament-officially-adopts-the-tax-justice-network-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\">voting on last week's motion<\/a> in the European\u00a0Parliament\u00a0on the motion on measures designed to tackle tax avoidance and\u00a0evasion\u00a0throughout Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/sides\/getDoc.do?type=TA&amp;reference=P7-TA-2012-0137&amp;language=EN&amp;ring=B7-2012-0203\" target=\"_blank\">motion in question did<\/a>, amongst other things:<\/p>\n<p>* Condemn Switzerland for not cooperating on tax evasion<\/p>\n<p>* Condemn tax competition;<\/p>\n<p>* Demand better company registrars and registers of trusts;<\/p>\n<p>* Demand full country-by-country reporting;<\/p>\n<p>* Demand more resources for tax authorities;<\/p>\n<p>* Condemn the use of tax havens.<\/p>\n<p>The motion was a clear statement of condemnation of morally repugnant tax abuse,\u00a0including\u00a0things like tax evading in Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/sed\/votingResults.do\" target=\"_blank\">motion was carried by 534 to 72<\/a>\u00a0(see page 35 of Thursday results).<\/p>\n<p>The only major political party in the whole of the EU to vote against the motion was the Tories.<\/p>\n<p>So much for the abhorrence at tax abuse\" it's so strong they voted to perpetuate it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve just looked at the voting on last week&#8217;s motion in the European\u00a0Parliament\u00a0on the motion on measures designed to tackle tax avoidance and\u00a0evasion\u00a0throughout Europe.
