{"id":15018,"date":"2012-04-13T14:52:02","date_gmt":"2012-04-13T13:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=15018"},"modified":"2012-04-13T14:52:02","modified_gmt":"2012-04-13T13:52:02","slug":"the-swiss-say-take-it-or-leave-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/04\/13\/the-swiss-say-take-it-or-leave-it\/","title":{"rendered":"The Swiss say take it or leave it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/politics\/Minister_rules_out_more_compromise_in_tax_rows.html?cid=32473456\" target=\"_blank\">Swissinfo is reporting today that<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Finance Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf has said Switzerland cannot make further concessions to Germany and the United States in a row over untaxed funds.<\/p>\n<p>She said the status quo would be a better option if the German parliament refused to accept the amended agreement signed by both countries last week.<\/p>\n<p>The revised deal which includes higher tax rates designed to regularise untaxed funds held by German residents in undeclared Swiss bank accounts.<br \/>\nHowever, German opposition parties have vowed to reject the treaty.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview in Friday\u2019s edition of the Neue Z\u00c3\u00bcrcher Zeitung newspaper, Widmer-Schlumpf said the same was true for talks with Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a threshold beyond which we cannot go as a sovereign state,\u201d she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I guess most people would think the\u00a0point\u00a0where a state would not go was in not\u00a0supporting\u00a0criminal\u00a0activity.<\/p>\n<p>But clearly the Swiss intend to use crime as the basis of their banking sector's activity.<\/p>\n<p>Why the EU has simply said that all Swiss\u00a0banks\u00a0will lose their licence to operate in the EU unless the Swiss cooperate is beyond me. Likewise, why and anti-money\u00a0laundering\u00a0rules\u00a0Switzerland\u00a0and its banks are just blocked as\u00a0recipients\u00a0for funds is again beyond me. It's such a\u00a0simple\u00a0sanction.
