{"id":14021,"date":"2012-02-06T12:30:03","date_gmt":"2012-02-06T12:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=14021"},"modified":"2012-02-06T12:30:03","modified_gmt":"2012-02-06T12:30:03","slug":"the-eu-makes-clear-it-is-at-war-with-swiss-banking-secrecy-whatever-dave-hartnett-thinks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/02\/06\/the-eu-makes-clear-it-is-at-war-with-swiss-banking-secrecy-whatever-dave-hartnett-thinks\/","title":{"rendered":"The EU makes clear it is at war with Swiss banking secrecy, whatever Dave Hartnett thinks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2012-02-06\/swiss-must-kill-bank-secrecy-revise-deals-eu-tax-chief-says.html\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg has reported this morning that<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Switzerland\u00a0must eliminate banking secrecy and renegotiate tax accords with the U.K. and\u00a0Germany\u00a0that clash with regional initiatives, according to European Union Tax Commissioner Algirdas Semeta.<\/p>\n<p>While Switzerland agreed in March 2009 to meet international standards to avoid being blacklisted as a tax haven by the\u00a0Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, bilateral agreements signed in September with Germany and the U.K. allow client identities to remain secret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBanking secrecy that allows companies or individuals to hide taxes has no future,\u201d Semeta said in an interview in Brussels.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I wonder which bit of that Dave Hartnett and george Osborne, with their appalling tax deal with Switzerland don't understand?<\/p>\n<p>Nor come to that, which buit\u00a0those\u00a0from Switzerland who defend such deals in comments on this blog don't\u00a0understand.<\/p>\n<p>Swiss banking secrecy has to die because it\u00a0exists\u00a0to\u00a0facilitate\u00a0tax and other crimes.
