{"id":13666,"date":"2012-01-16T16:05:59","date_gmt":"2012-01-16T16:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=13666"},"modified":"2012-01-16T16:05:59","modified_gmt":"2012-01-16T16:05:59","slug":"christian-aid-on-labour-and-tax-havens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2012\/01\/16\/christian-aid-on-labour-and-tax-havens\/","title":{"rendered":"Christian Aid on Labour and tax havens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My friends at Christian Aid issued this press release today:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Christian Aid welcomes Ed Miliband\u2019s determination to tackle the tax havens which are harming UK public finances but it urges him to go further, because financial secrecy is a curse for poor countries too.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u2018It\u2019s great that Mr Miliband has recognised that tax haven secrecy is damaging people in the UK, by providing a cover for people and companies to hide their wealth and avoid paying the taxes that are so urgently needed,\u2019 said Dr David McNair, Christian Aid\u2019s Principal Adviser on Economic Justice.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u2018But we hope the Labour leader will also recognise that financial secrecy has devastating effects on public services and people\u2019s lives across the world, especially in poor countries.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u2018Christian Aid estimates that tax dodging costs poor countries $160 billion a year, which is much more than they receive in aid. So they, too, need action to shed light on offshore accounts and other wealth which may be liable for tax.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u2018This is an international problem and it demands international solutions, starting with a global end to tax haven secrecy.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u2018It would be fantastic to see the Labour party join the campaign to<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.endtaxhavensecrecy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Arial;\">End Tax Haven Secrecy<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">, demanding that G20 countries commit to a global deal under which all tax havens have to reveal that information to all tax authorities.
