As someone who is quietly\u00a0proud\u00a0of being an Irish as well as a UK citizen, and who is a republican at heart, I\u00a0understand\u00a0all the reasons why many in Scotland may want to be\u00a0independent\u00a0of the rest of the UK. And I think Scotland may well be an entirely viable self-governing country - without being a tax haven (heaven forbid).<\/p>\n<p>But I'm also deeply worried about Salmond's plans. If Scotland is\u00a0independent\u00a0the case for the\u00a0remaining\u00a0union with Northern Ireland is weak and I fear that leads to trouble.<\/p>\n<p>And, candidly\u00a0selfishly, the idea of England and Wales as a permanent Tory fiefdom scares me rigid, and leaves me wondering if there would then be any constraint on the City and its madness.<\/p>\n<p>So whilst I see all the appeal of Scottish\u00a0independence\u00a0for the Scottish I do really rather hope they don't,\u00a0whilst\u00a0accepting\u00a0all the biases and prejudices that saying so involves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong about Scottish nationalism.
