{"id":10683,"date":"2011-06-25T08:21:35","date_gmt":"2011-06-25T07:21:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=10683"},"modified":"2011-06-24T21:25:04","modified_gmt":"2011-06-24T20:25:04","slug":"could-the-european-savings-tax-directive-reforms-finally-be-approved-in-july","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2011\/06\/25\/could-the-european-savings-tax-directive-reforms-finally-be-approved-in-july\/","title":{"rendered":"Could the European Savings Tax Directive reforms finally be approved in July?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Europolitics <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europolitics.info\/a-step-closer-to-sanctions-against-blameworthy-states-art307451.html\" target=\"_blank\">had an interesting article<\/a> yesterday on the European Savings Tax Directive.<\/p>\n<p>Radical reforms of the\u00a0Directive\u00a0are being\u00a0proposed\u00a0by the European\u00a0Commission to first of all extend it to all companies and trusts (closing\u00a0vast numbers of loopholes in the process) and to require the tax havens covered by the Directive (such as the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) to massively extend the data they will have to exchange with states like the UK because the beneficial ownership of offshore trusts and companies will have to be disclosed by them.<\/p>\n<p>Italy blocked the passing of the reforms last month for reasons no one quite understands.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is rumour reaches me that approval at the July meeting of ECOFIN is now likely. If that is true then the impact on the tax havens affected will be enormous. And that pleases me, a lot, I admit. The opportunities for crooks and cheats to hide their money in these places - which despite all their claims is still far too easy to do - will be\u00a0largely\u00a0closed down.<\/p>\n<p>We should all celebrate that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Europolitics had an interesting article yesterday on the European Savings Tax Directive.
