{"id":10211,"date":"2011-05-27T09:52:05","date_gmt":"2011-05-27T08:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=10211"},"modified":"2011-05-27T09:52:24","modified_gmt":"2011-05-27T08:52:24","slug":"how-to-waste-280-million-cut-corporation-tax-in-northern-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2011\/05\/27\/how-to-waste-280-million-cut-corporation-tax-in-northern-ireland\/","title":{"rendered":"How to waste \u00c2\u00a3280 million: cut corporation tax in Northern Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I know I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2011\/05\/26\/each-new-job-created-by-corporation-tax-cuts-in-northern-ireland-will-cost-61000\/\" target=\"_blank\">keep blogging<\/a> about the folly of Northern Ireland wanting to cut its corporation tax rate of 12.5%, \u00a0but I admit that I have a preference for being wise before the event, \u00a0and this is a policy that is bound to go wrong for reasons <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Documents\/CorpoTaxlores.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">that I've explained here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is good to see however that I (and the ICTU and TUC) \u00a0are not alone in this opinion. I'd <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qub.ac.uk\/schools\/media\/Media,236375,en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">warmly recommend a report<\/a> from \u00a0Mike Tomlinson and Grace Kelly from the Poverty and Social Exclusion in the UK Northern Ireland research team, based at Queen's University, Belfast, which comes to the same conclusion considerably more eruditely than I might have done.<\/p>\n<p>As they conclude:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The main debate over economic strategy has been about lowering the rate of\u00a0Corporation Tax.
