{"id":10123,"date":"2011-05-20T11:05:06","date_gmt":"2011-05-20T10:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=10123"},"modified":"2011-08-15T09:33:56","modified_gmt":"2011-08-15T08:33:56","slug":"when-will-the-isle-of-man-admit-i-was-right-on-vat-all-along-becasue-they-now-admit-the-uk-is-still-subsidising-them-to-be-a-tax-haven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2011\/05\/20\/when-will-the-isle-of-man-admit-i-was-right-on-vat-all-along-becasue-they-now-admit-the-uk-is-still-subsidising-them-to-be-a-tax-haven\/","title":{"rendered":"When will the Isle of Man admit I was right on VAT all along because they now admit the UK is still subsidising them to be a tax haven?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iomtoday.co.im\/news\/isle-of-man-news\/questions_over_vat_deal_withdrawn_1_3395381\" target=\"_blank\">Isle of Man Today has reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Chief Minister Tony Brown MHK revealed in an exclusive interview with this week\u2019s Isle of Man Examiner that the UK had a clear intention to revise the agreement again to ensure that the island received no more VAT revenue than we would collect if we were independent.<\/p>\n<p>He said if the change was made, it would result in a \u2018substantial\u2019 cut in revenue.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now that's odd.<\/p>\n<p>Before the October 2009 revision to this\u00a0agreement\u00a0the\u00a0Isle of Man said there was no\u00a0subsidy\u00a0in it. I argued <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2007\/03\/18\/the-uk-paying-the-isle-of-man-to-be-a-tax-haven\/\" target=\"_blank\">there was<\/a> - to the tune of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2009\/05\/18\/isle-of-man-costs-uk-at-least-15-billion-a-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a3230 million a year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span>When the agreement was revised I was (probably rightly)\u00a0accused\u00a0of having\u00a0precipitated\u00a0the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2009\/10\/20\/the-isle-of-man-loses-140-million-and-still-cant-talk-about-taxing\/\" target=\"_blank\">removal of between \u00a390 million and \u00a3140 million<\/a> or so of that subsidy. My\u00a0response\u00a0was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2009\/11\/26\/the-isle-of-man-is-still-being-subsidised-by-at-least-40-million-a-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">to\u00a0make\u00a0clear that the change had not removed all the subsidy<\/a>. Of course, I was criticised again.<\/p>\n<p>Then I suggested, I think rightly, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2010\/10\/08\/get-the-facts-right-in-the-isle-of-man\/\" target=\"_blank\">that the\u00a0Isle of Man was trying to manipulate the data<\/a> to reclaim the subsidy. And of course I was\u00a0criticised\u00a0again, heavily.<\/p>\n<p>And now the\u00a0Chief\u00a0Minister has admitted I was right all\u00a0along, yet again, and what is more, the UK has the right to act on that logic and remove the\u00a0remaining\u00a0subsidy from the Isle of Man.<\/p>\n<p>In fact I'd argue, of course, that the UK not only has that right, but has a duty to act to end this subsidy once and for all. The idea that the UK subsidises the\u00a0Isle of Man to be a tax haven is absurd.<\/p>\n<p>But will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.im\/lib\/news\/cso\/newchiefminister1.xml\" target=\"_blank\">Tony Brown apologise<\/a>?
