{"id":10039,"date":"2011-05-15T21:05:39","date_gmt":"2011-05-15T20:05:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=10039"},"modified":"2011-05-15T21:05:39","modified_gmt":"2011-05-15T20:05:39","slug":"could-this-be-the-week-we-get-a-new-european-union-savings-tax-directive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2011\/05\/15\/could-this-be-the-week-we-get-a-new-european-union-savings-tax-directive\/","title":{"rendered":"Could this be the week we get a new European Union Savings Tax Directive?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.europeanvoice.com\/article\/imported\/hungary-pushes-for-harmonised-savings-tax\/71060.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">European Voice reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Officials are hoping that next week's (17 May) meeting of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.europeanvoice.com\/topic\/industryterm\/finance+ministers\">finance ministers<\/a> will at last see movement on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.europeanvoice.com\/topic\/organisation\/European+Union\">EU<\/a>'s plans to harmonise savings taxation, and the issue of banking secrecy that has become the stumbling block in the talks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Amazingly, a new obstacle has emerged after Austria and Luxembourg appear to be allowing progress:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But just as these two countries appear ready to allow progress, a new obstacle has arisen from a threatened Italian veto. Italy's concern is of a different nature \u2014 relating to its wish for changes in the way that savings taxes recovered from member states are distributed.
