It is only a bit over a month since we relaunched the YouTube channel linked to this blog. The data over the last 28 days suggests that this has been worth doing:
Over the same period, the blog had, admittedly, more than three times that number of views. But it's not new as far as most people are concerned.
And the viewing hours are good: YouTube requires a channel to have 4,000 hours of watch time in a year before a channel can be monetised. We did that in the last month, and more besides.
In addition, they require that a channel have 1,000 subscribers. We now have 10,000.
That does not mean we are going to monetise any time soon - which means adding adverts. I would much rather avoid that. But it does mean that we are hitting what they see as thresholds of seriousness.
And since we think that more than 80% of views do not come from here, this means that we are reaching new audiences, which was always the plan.
I think the effort is worthwhile and more than enough to be buying planning to buy much better cameras and lenses soon as an indication of a long-term commitment to this project, not least because I am enjoying doing this. It's a lot better than retirement.

Brilliant, totally brilliant- really well done.
I will be short
SECONDED
You mean, they are getting too long?
No, sometimes I write a lot.
Don’t want to take undue advantage
I visit the gym at a quiet time, just after/around lunch. The treadmill has a screen on which plays, in mute, various antique related or property related programmes. One thing I have noticed, particularly on the antique shows, is that the various presenters favour visual gimmicks (where personality used to work) in order to stand out. Flamboyant waistcoats, red framed spectacles, dancing eyebrows, bright coloured trousers, bow ties and so on.
Your videos work very well for me, the content and delivery are just right but might you consider something akin to a visual signature to help you appeal to those of us who are drunk on daytime television? Perhaps round sunglasses and a vibrant beret similar to Captain Sensible? Maybe even a black cape with a purple silk lining.
In all seriousness I like the subtitles and the text below if want to quote you. Being an avid listenener to audiobooks I’m really into voices. Yours works very well.
Tricks? No!
As to the rest, thank you
Very well done sir, those are impressive numbers.
YouTube can still put ads on your video even if you are not ‘Monetised’. It just means you don’t earn any money from them. See below:

We have a Youtube account for work on which we put mostly training videos. These videos are ‘Unlisted” so don’t appear in regular YouTube search and don’t get anywhere near the kinds of numbers you are getting. They still get ads.
As far as I can see, the only way you can not have Ads is to mark the videos “Made for Kids”, but this creates other issues, for example, this setting won’t display a logo on your videos if you want one.
I might as well get paid then….but people tell me they aren’t getting ads
I have a paid account for editing reasons so don’t see them
Richard,
YES! Do whatever you must do to get paid ‘your cut” from from YouTube as YouTube is definitely ‘Monetizing/‘Monetising’ ’ you and all other people with a YouTube channel.
YouTube should NOT get all the revenues generated from your from your hard work and educational endeavors.
This is on Thomas’ work list for next week…..
Well done Richard and Thomas.
It’s good news also that you’re reaching a wider audience – great work.
Thank you.
Thanks
Fantastic news Richard, especially that you are reaching a wider audience than just those who read this blog. It is so vital that your central messages on MMT, what is money, government debt and the role proper government can play in society and the economy are reaching as many people as possible and countering the ‘there’s no money’ nonsense prevalent in the media and politics now.
Thanks
YouTube works on algorithms. YouTube recommends on engagement.
All supporters should LIKE the video and write a short comment. Hopefully the public will get a better understanding of economics.
Keep up the good work Richard
You are right
It would rerally help if people did
