Gratitude as ever to Richard for posting this song.
There are some subjects where ‘satire’ really isn’t the appropriate response, because there is no humour at all to be found. So it is with the Illegal Migration Bill. But as a musician I firmly believe in the power of music to motivate defiance while providing a useful emotional release.
I really wanted to take the anger and disgust I was feeling at this despicable piece of legislation and turn it into a positive call for compassion and renewed sense of our humanitarian obligations, rather than it just becoming one long solid rant about how atrocious this government’s language and policies are (though they still get the measure of scorn they deserve). To that end, taking these three powerful and uplifting tunes and rolling them into one piece seemed like the best match for the sentiment of the lyrics.
Anger is important, but it’s never enough. We need to put forward moral narratives and reframe this issue (and others), wherever and however we can, using whatever skills and opportunities we happen to have.
I guess it comes down to that old quote/cliche, which I’ll adjust because it obviously applies to everyone and not just men: evil triumphs when good people do nothing.
Seems as apt now in 2023 as it ever was.
Thanks Mark
