So sorry Richard – hope you recover quickly
I am so sorry to hear this. I hope your symptoms are mild and you recover quickly.
Sorry to hear that. There is a lot of it about. Get well soon.
Get well soon.
I am in the same boat, got what I thought was a summer cold (streaming nose etc) but was persuaded by my wife to test. I am just hoping it clears itself up in time for a hospital appointment next week, I will test the evening before.
Get well soon
I have had it since Sunday and my youngest has just got it again (12)
His school,a middle school have just cancelled a number of events due to Covid
Good luck with it
Get well, soon.
Craig
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Rest and recuperate. Give yourself time.
Best wishes, Richard. Hope you recover quickly.
Sorry to hear this, Richard. I now know of several people who have COVID for the second or third time. Take care of yourself.
Take care, Richard – for your sake and for that of many others!
I hope you get well soon, Prof.
Thanks
And to everyone who has commented
Get well soon.
Today is day 7 of me testing positive. Though my symptoms aren’t severe, it’s the weirdest illness I’ve ever had.
Fingers crossed.
Good luck
Boris johnson and his cabinet of talented, diligent and compassionate ministers send their commiserations Richard and would like to assure you they are doing their absolute utmost to combat this rise in Covid cases and all the other serious problems facing the UK.
They, tory MPs and everyone who is a member of the tory party also want to assure you that the contest to replace Mr johnson as PM will not deflect them one iota from running the country they own.., sorry, love, so much for the benefit of all its citizens.
Sorry to hear this Richard, get well soon.
There’s a lot going on!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
A heck of a lot of it about at present, as shown by the fact that almost 20% of secondary school pupils were absent last week (most due to Covid, I’d guess). With a wife who is a secondary schoolteacher and young children in school/nursery, I’m just waiting to see if we can avoid catching it again before the end of term next week (last time we all had it was thankfully mild in January/February so probably BA.1, but the new wave of BA.5 seems to be causing more severe symptoms). If we do catch it, I’ll be off work for a week or two (a colleague who is also a family member is CEV) and I’ve no idea how I’ll manage to get everything done or how the business will get through what should be a busy period without me!
This is what the government is bizarrely keen to ignore – not just the illness (and the terrible pressure on the NHS), but the lost hours in the office.
Hopefully, Richard’s latest dose will be mild and we’ll somehow get a turnaround in policy and some proper public health measures before the next wave hits this autumn and we’re again suffering from another round of illness and lost productivity.
Good luck
I am doing almost nothing
Which I find quite hard
Sorry to hear this Richard. Hope you rest well and recover quickly and fully. The daily blog and tweets are appreciated by so many, but your health has to be the number one priority!
Sorry to hear that. Get well soon.
Get well soon Richard.
Commiserations. We must all hope this doesn’t turn into Long Covid.
Sorry to hear that Richard. Get well soon
Sorry to hear this
I hope you’re back on your feet and restored to full health as soon as possible!
Get well soon Richard
My wife and I picked up something 5 days ago. Covid tests are negative but whatever it is it’s horrible, intense sore throats, muzziness and general lethargy. Nothing’s touching it so far
That sounds pretty similar to this and I have definitely got it in the test kit
Get well
Probably best to assume you do have it, even with the negative tests given the prevalence, especially given the sore throat which seems a giveaway for lots of the current infections. Also, for the fully vaccinated, symptoms often appear several days before the positive tests because of the strong initial immune response.
I’d recommend everyone gets a pulse oximeter, just in case what begins as a relatively mild infection escalates. The facility to discover if you are becoming hypoxic and need urgent medical attention is well worth the 20 quid or so they cost Providing you can afford it, of course.
Robert, assume you have it. I recently caught it from someone who had symptoms for 5 days, testing each day, not positive until the 5th day of symptoms. Good luck with it!
Nasal swabs alone might not detect it. We’ve found throat swabs to be the most reliable.
I had symptoms for a day before LFTs showed anything.
Oh no. I’m so sorry. Take care, rest well. Hoping for a full, healthy recovery!
Thanks
Hi Richard, take it easy, rest up and forget the blog for a day or two. Get well soon, I fell to the covid about 6 wks ago here in france. All the best, Mel
Thanks
I hope you get better soon Richard; in fact, my commiserations to others here who’ve got it. Mine felt like a moderately severe cold for a couple of days, nothing more. Lucky me. Judging by the restrictions on entry to premises/wards at a local hospital, the NHS staff are taking it seriously, even if the witless fools in this ‘government’ couldn’t care less.
Speaking of witless fools, I think you might enjoy this from John Crace Richard….

And at least bonkers Braverman is out!
Thanks
It does just feel like pretty bad flu right now
Not fun – and enough to stop me doing anything – which is rare – but hopefully better soon
And Barverman was good news
Get well soon, we need you.
Particularly with the current competition to find the craziest Tory, and Labour following a little way behind
Get well soon
Just recovering. I found that olbus oil sweets were great for my sore throat also take decongestants like sudofed to keep your head clear.
Definitely not something I would like again
Thanks
Good luck with it Richard! I had it four weeks ago, was floored for one day, pretty lethargic for a few more, and back to work (remote) after a week, but didn’t test negative until day 13. Everyone says take it easy, don’t push yourself, getting back into things too fast can trigger post-covid complications (Long Covid).
I am definitely going to take it easy
Good and very wise.
I’m sorry to hear you’re a Covid victim and hope you’ll make a swift recovery. I know you’ve been a strong proponent of mask-wearing ever since the UK Gov abandoned the public to their individual fates, but it seems that almost nobody is treating the risk of infection seriously: on my recent shopping expeditions I’ve been the only person, staff and customers, wearing a mask, which just seems nuts. Most people seem to think “it’s just like a winter cold or light flu”, which makes no sense when we see daily on TV what’s happening to the NHS.
Get well soon.
I continue to take precautions, wearing an FP2 mask when out, but I suspect I caught this om a train where no one else was
Get well soon Richard.
So sorry you got ‘Rona. I hope it passes quickly.
Rest and be well.
I hope you get a negative test quickly. I tested positive for this first time after tube and rail travel to Wales and back to London
The worst for me was a horrible metallic taste in my mouth that killed my appetite
Slight cough for 2 days and slight cold but not streaming at Sll
I have been taking vitamin supplements of D3 , zinc and Vit c
I declined the booster so just 2 AstraZenca in 2021
My brother who has had 4 jabs has been quite laid up
with it for 10 days. I got a negative test after 5
I don’t believe there is a science and we all react in different ways
I think there is a science and the government is not following it
I agree, too. There is a science about it. I follow the Independent Sage group. The numbers of people who have it are way out, as testing costs for most people. However, in County Durham there are as many people with it now as there were a year ago, when testing and recording were in full swing.
Sorry you have caught it, Richard. Hope you recover quickly and with no long covid symptoms. Can’t have you with covid brain fog. Hope you manage to stay clear of oxygen cylinders, too.
I am sure you won’t be up to it yet, but I have just started reading NHS under Siege, collated by John Lister.
Thanks
Long Covid has always been my fear
With respect, anecdote is not data. It is your choice, of course, but I would encourage you to please get your booster. People react differently to this virus. Who knows, your brother may be particularly vulnerable for some unknown reason, and without his boosters, he have died already.
There is science. It changes and evolves as more evidence becomes available and scientists reassess their positions. It is certainly clear that vaccinations and boosters are very safe, and they protect you, and indirectly others. Just as wearing masks protect you and others.
We are at or approaching a third Omicron peak. It is not “endemic” as some like to say – that is, constantly maintained at a predictable baseline level. For the last year, we have seen repeated epidemic outbreaks, and we are currently in the middle of one. (Just because influenza is known about, generally mild, and happens every year does, not mean that a seasonal winter outbreak is not an epidemic, in exactly the same way. Tens of thousands die from the resulting pneumonia each year. Just as we have had approaching 50,000 COVID deaths in the last 12 months – over 200,000 by death certificates now.)
I agree with all that
Get well soon Richard. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Sorry to hear, Richard.
Hope it’s a mild version and that it leaves no lasting effects.
Your incisive and instructive writings are sorely needed and greatly appreciated.
Very best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Get well soon Richard.
We have both just recovered from it.
This latest variant seems to be scooping up those of us who have avoided it for the past two years.
Just read your news. So sorry to hear that. Hope you’re feeliing better soon. Your country needs you!
So desperately sorry to hear you have Covid.. how terribly brave of you to continue to post in these dark times and provide the guidance and support so many on this forum desperately need.. i admire your resilience, tenacity and selflessness.. you are a beacon of hope and sanctuary for so many…
haha… Is that the same James Pursey who was the lead singer of sham 69???
it’s a piss take you clown
Thank you for wasting your time here
I note you are also James Pursey
Tell me, what motivates you to waste your life in such a small minded way?
Get well soon! We need your commentary on the current light shower of economic dim wintery. What an opportunity for an opposition.
