An introduction to tax: my new YouTube video, out this morning

Posted on

The YouTube channel I am planning has four major themes:

  • Economics
  • Tax
  • The Green New Deal
  • Accounting

Each is getting its own  introductory video and today it's the turn of tax:

This video sets out the basis for my thinking on tax, which sets it in a social and macroeconomic context as much as one where revenue is the issue.

I mention six reasons for tax. These are to:

  1. Raise revenue, either to fund government spending or, alternatively, to reclaim the money that the government has already spent into the economy;
  2. Ratify the value of the currency of the jurisdiction;
  3. Redistribute income and wealth;
  4. Reprice goods and services;
  5. Reorganise the economy through what is called fiscal policy.
  6. Raise democratic representation - people who pay tax vote;

There is much more on each of these in the Tax After Coronavirus series, and there will be on the videos in due course.

The thing I can say with some confidence is that there is a great deal to talk about when it comes to tax. If there are specific requests, please let me know.
