I don't especially go out of my way to make myself popular when writing here. Nor do I actively chase traffic. But I will be honest: like all writers I do like to be read. I think that goes with the territory.
Last month this blog was read more than half a million times. Usually 200,000 reads in a month is good. The blog had only exceeded 400,000 reads in a month once before. This level of readership was quite exceptional in that case.
I just wish it had happened for happier reason.
Thanks for reading this post.

Well done Richard. We need the truth and original thinking and you provide that with honesty.
Thank you.
Events dear chap, events!

I see you mentioned in the Guangming Daily earlier today. Probably connected to “PCC” being promoted, and someone looked over here. It must be a great honour.
I admit I could not find that….
If you go to

I tried…..
I found the online search engine but couldn’t find it
But thanks
Found an easier way to get to the article:
Go to google.co.uk and search for

Gotcha.
Hi Richard – just to offer my tuppence worth of congrats. That’s a well-deserved record. Over the years your insightful observations, forensic analyses and practical solutions for resolving our chronic socio-economic ills have a cumulative educational effect that has assuredly changed the way many of your readers think, despite an element of confirmation bias (guilty as charged!).
And, as you know, most don’t publicly react on-line. Without being frivolous, it’s like a good virus that grows unseen and exponentially. Thankfully you enjoy blogging – even when not feeling 100% – which helps to make ‘Tax Research UK’ unique among other comparable political on-line initiatives. Even though my own comments are infrequent, I read everything you publish here and share with others. So, thank you for your remarkable daily output and concomitant, reasoned perspicacity.
Good to hear your energy levels are restored. Barista: un caffè forte per il professore! 🙂
Thanks John
I hare your faith in coffee
Longing to get back to a decent one…served by a good barista
For good home coffee I’d suggest getting a kafflano kompresso. It makes an excellent espresso with plenty of crema.
However, make sure you get the beans ground very finely – I have found 2 stops finer than standard espresso ground to be optimum (about half way between std espresso and pulped beans).
Not a problem to adjust if you stomp your beans yourself, but a little frustrating if you buy 100g pre ground and it’s just that bit too coarse…
It’s odd that I never thought I’d think about such a thing, but I am missing well made coffee
