In the September 2018 Tax Justice Network monthly podcast/radio show, the Taxcast:
- we talk to journalist Oliver Bullough about his new book, just out ‘Moneyland: why thieves and crooks now rule the world, and how to take it back' We discuss the transnational elite that has broken free of democratic control and corruption contagion.
- Also, 10 years after the financial crash, the risks are as high as before, if not more severe — how do we tackle the next crisis?
- Plus, the fifth aide of US President Trump has now been convicted of, or admitted criminal charges: what does Paul Manafort's case tell us about the spread of plutocracy and oligarchy?
Politics is increasingly dominated by this very tight elite class and it is all about Moneyland…dark money is the enemy of democracy, there is a battle between money and democracy and right now money is winning. And it's a very worrying thought that we aren't more aware of this as a society and we really need to think about it because a trillion dollars a year is a lot of money and that's being stolen every year, which means all of that money is stacked up against us. And the longer we don't act, the more money there will be essentially fighting back and they have been fighting back very successfully.”
~ Oliver Bullough, author of Moneyland: why thieves and crooks now rule the world, and how to take it back
Featuring: journalist and author Oliver Bullough and John Christensen of the Tax Justice Network. Produced and presented by Naomi Fowler.

Pinning responsibility on crooks with smarts was tough enough as a cop. At some point I started to wonder how we are all responsible in some way for the dirty-hands moral decisions of others as corrupted in noble cause actions. Leaders, I was told, had to set superordinate goals and corporate cultures. It is quite shattering when the penny drops and you realise the leaders are the ones who run operations networked between a thousand Fagins. Though many of us think it would be a good idea to decorate lamp-posts with swinging banksters, we forget that each ppi transaction was a criminal offence much as a kid pickpocketing for Fagin. There is more to this than oligarchs.
Very informative, but that has to be the singularly most depressing podcast I’ve listened to, and I’m really not all that sure why. I woke up feeling quite chipper this morning but, after listening to that, I feel like I should ring the Samaritans.
Impotent is how I felt; like a rabbit in headlights. To dispel this mood I decided to watch a Russian flash mob dance thing set to Putting on the Ritz; the theme music used on this podcast, as follows:

That cheered me up no end. All that collective effort and good cheer; so very socalism meets Hollywood. That is UNTIL I realised that the groom organising it was probably an oligarch!
Oh well…. you can’t win ’em all. (There would be a droopy faced smilie here IF I knew how to import the blasted things.)
