Most people in other European countries that I speak to have concerns very similar to mine with respect to the EU & the way in which it functions. They, for the most part, want to see the Uk stay & drive change from within. This is possible, and most definitely worth doing. United – Europe and its states will always be stronger.
Richard
This leaflet is brilliant – thanks a lot. I’ve downloaded a copy.
Much better than that thing that did the rounds from Mr Cameron which ahs already been consigned to the family recycle bin.
Incidentally I see that i and the Independent is reporting today of leaks about TTIP:
http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/ttip-leaks-shocking-what-are-they-eu-us-deal-a7010121.html
I rather hope TTIP is dead
If TTIP is dead they will be able to argue that being at the “back of the queue” is better than not being in the queue at all and all those comments about there not being an agreement with the US for decades because the UK is in the EU will look very credible.
I’d liked to think so too Richard – but this fool has other ideas:
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/may/04/david-cameron-political-courage-ttip-trade-deal
Larry Elliot seems to think that TTIP has been ‘kicked into the long grass’.
Have you ever seen how a cat prowls amongst long grass? Or a snake?
We need to continue to be vigilant. They’ll be back – I’m sure of it.
This is laughable. John Mcdonnel? A lifelong Euro skeptic? Yanis? When his party tried to reverse Austerity they didn’t listen and in the end Greece got a worse deal(so they are beyond reform) Caroline Lucas does not like the TTIP (as do many others) yet the EU is has not scrapped the idea. Meanwhile almost all EU countries with the exception of Corporation Tax have lower taxes than here yet they are going to lecture about the tories being party of the rich lmao.
Sam
I really do think you are being, his shall I put ths politely?, clueless
Richard
How am I clueless? Everything I said was factually accurate.
You answered my points and questions
You made assertions
You offered no facts
Everyone has issues with the EU Sam – it is not perfect. But what about America – a country where the market cannot provide affordable health care, where it’s middle class is shrinking etc., etc?
But to break away from a treaty agreement amidst a faltering economy caused by a financial crisis created by wilful American stupidity is not a good idea.
The American Government’s next ploy could be to do to the EU what it did to former Yugoslavia: when TTIP falls away, it could start to insist that it will deal with trade on an individual basis, state per state. This in itself could cause competition and friction amongst those EU states to get access to American markets. The USA Government will divide and conquer and cause lots of trouble.
As for people like Varoufakis (who tried to stall austerity – he tried Sam) and others – well – they are entitled to change their minds when the facts of the matter change. And they have. We should be pleased when people listen and change should we not? The Tory Government using our ‘sovereignty’ has not listened to anyone about the bedroom tax; will not reveal how many suicides there have been amongst the disabled it has punished by withdrawing financial support.
I’d rather we were in the EU than negotiating on our own with the Americans. It is a very isolated place to because the American negotiators are bullies and liars. Just ask the native North American Indians about that one
Isn’t it the case that the most significant tax avoidance has been facilitated by things like the Double Irish and the Dutch Sandwich? All strategies that exist because of the EU and the freedom to trade easily between member states whilst relying upon all sorts of treaty protection that was difficult for member states to stop?
The EU may have cracked down on some things, but in the meantime the massive avoidance by multinationals that really upsets the average man in the street has been a product of EU rules.
Facilitated by member states
Opposed by the EU
The leader of the EU Commission is ex prime minister of Luxembourg and has probably done more than any other European to screw the UK taxpayer to the benefit of US multinationals through tax “deals”. He also appears to have been willing to sell out EU citizens on many cherished principles to get the TTIP deal done. Hopefully the recent whistle blowing will have put paid to that shoddy arrangement. But can we trust this slippery customer. I don’t think so.
I am looking at history, not a moment
But even Juncker is making appropriate noises
The past is no guide to future performance. My concern is that the Commission has been the victim of regulatory capture hence the poor decisions coming out of it in recent years and days e.g. Greece, Ukraine and Turkey. Heading for the rocks!
