Just listened to a profile of Paul Dacre. Sounds like a vicious man who happens to do the occasional good like supporting the hunt for Stephen Lawrence’s murderers and the campaign for unleaded petrol. he went through a ‘conversion’ to American values in the 70’s and contrasted it with the ‘drab’ world of britain in the 70’s with ‘nationalized industries losing money’ and corrupt labour Councils and bleak housing estates. He seems to be oblivious to the rise of oligarchy, huge amounts of tax payers’ money supporting big corporations, gross inequality, free-lunches for the 1% and 37 million Americans using food banks -these highly driven power-crazed lunatics live in cloud-cuckoo-land.
Being v careful here, did he do good ?
He certainly ensured a conviction that wouldn’t otherwise have been achieved. The gang that killed Stephen were disgusting racist scum, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t get a fair trial. I’m not convinced they did.
It was a horrible trial because one of the accused was the son of a leading London crime-lord who was, himself, giving evidence to Scotland Yard. The conflicts of interest were palpable but largely ignored.
You make a good point -I suppose i was trying to Acknowledge something vaguely ‘positive’ about someone who largely represents the very worst of journalism. The man strikes me as a thug, overall.
I am afraid the left side of the diagram is wrong. It may represent the wishful thinking of British people.
The reality is that the Daily Mail is the second most popular newspaper in Britain and we know who is at Number One.
I suggest the Brits really take a honest look at themselves and start to work at their rotten core.
Andrea
The left circle comprises “British values” NOT “Values held by British people”.
I’m sure you’re right that a century of brain-washing has left all too few people capable of understanding what “British values” are, especially as they will be constantly assured by opinion-makers that they are/should be something entirely different.
There was a time, I must be honest, when I would’ve been quite dismissive about “The Lord Of The Rings” because it isn’t (TMM) great literature. Now, however, I love it because it is the last encapsulation of those old British values, which rated clean air & water, a pint of good beer, & the chance of a long walk so much higher than the “progress” of our 21st century which, in order to expedite consumption, gives us dirty air, dirty water & a countryside defaced by motorways.
Nicely put Richard. It’s been said by others, that the DM represents the exact opposite of the British values you’ve put up. Still, given that the editor is a liar and a bully, why be surprised?

“Values” can mean anything. I’m sure Paul Dacre would argue, probably quite honestly, that his paper exhibits all of them. Objectively he would be wrong, of course, but people like Dacre don’t DO objectivity.
The last, greatest, embodiment of British values was George Orwell. I can’t imagine how horrified & disgusted he would be if we brought him back to a country where manufacturing has almost ceased, the small number of people lucky enough to have work work such long hours they never see their families, children, terrified by the roaring traffic, just sit indoors playing computer games, old people stagnate, ignored by their families & wait to die while their offspring spend more time considering investment opportunities than their (laughable euphemism) “loved ones”.
This is a SICK society & no-one will admit it. We get up & consume & go to bed & Consume & get up & consume more & all we hear from politicians is that they’re “standing up for hard-working, aspirational people”. How’s about (boys & girls) telling the hard-working, aspirational people that they are the RAAS problem!
RAAS-anyone? More blog speak or tax world acronym? Other than that, William, well said!
Apparently DM journalists have a name for Dacre’s standard torrent of abuse: the Vagina Monologues.
I have a new name for the organ: The Daily Hate Mail.
I would suggest that the Uk no longer has forgiveness as part of their values. If you fall over on a broken paving slab, the first thing you need to do is SUE them.
Today’s Morning Star (the only one which exists where I live) had a splendid front page with a picture of yesterday’s demo with the headline “We’re proud to be hated by the Daily Mail” (or something like that). I now no longer have it because I planted it in a stack of Daily Hate Mails – the most popular rag in town.
