HMRC say their vision is to close the tax gap – by sacking 10,000 of their staff

Posted on

H M Revenue & Customs published their new business plan this morning. I got sent a copy by a friendly MP.

They say their number one vision is to close the tax gap.

They intend to do this, it seems, by cutting their staff from 64,000 now to 54,000 by 2015.

These positions are irreconcilable.

There is really very little else to be said about the plan - there's a giant elephant sitting in the middle of it called the absolute impossibility of achieving the planned result without employing the required people to do it.

The crass management of our tax authority is clearly going to survive Dave Hartnett's reign.
