Might I ask a favour and ask that you sign Caroline Lucas MP's e-petition for tax justice?
The petition reads as follows:
We applaud campaigns by trade unions, church groups, and civil society demanding tax justice and join them in calling on the Government to take action to identify those avoiding and evading tax. Firstly, the Chancellor should force all multinational companies filing accounts in the UK to reveal their use of tax havens and publish what profits they earn and what tax they pay in each country in which they operate, without exception. Secondly, banks should be required by law to give details of all accounts they maintain for companies operating in the UK so HMRC and Companies House can chase any companies who pretend to be dormant to evade tax. These two simple changes could help recover billions of pounds of lost tax for the UK by revealing those hiding their income from view.
Thank you.

At last an MP with some principles to stand up and call time on this shameful practise. Can we now expect the Labour Opposition to get behind this and start to tap into the huge swell of opinion in the UK that is crying out for politicians who will state unequivocally that it is wrong to cut services to people whilst tax avoidance and evasion is going on on an industrial scale. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait too long.
Bash Ed Balls on this, please!
When organisations such as the CBI are complaining that the workforce is barely employable, and also that the tax bill for businesses is too high, do they not see the conflict? You cannot expect the benefits of society (an educated workforce which has access to reasonable healthcare and is able to travel to work along maintained roads or via a functional public transport system), if you do not contribute to the costs (the education and healthcare systems and transport network), via taxes.
In my experience, particularly regarding the Administration sector (in the north east area certainly) employers expect you to come in and do the job from day one, no training, no nothing!
Also, if you do not have previous work experience in this field, even if you happen to have extensive IT qualificatiobs, forget it!
If employers want skilled staff, it’s about time they paid to train them!
How does a company “pretend” to be dormant? Either there are no transactions through the books (i.e. it is a dormant company) or there are transactions (i.e. it is NOT a dormant company). It’s pretty clear cut. I think it demonstrates Ms Lucas’ lack of knowledge about how businesses are run.
I think it is, I am afraid, you who is not showing a real understanding here
Of course companies are as a matter of fact dormant or not
But hundreds of thousands a year can claim to be dormant when they are not very, very easily, especially if absolutely no one checks
Caroline Lucas is very cogniscant of this fact
Unless you claim tax evasion does not happen I would hope you are too
And it is tax evasion – costing in my estimate £16 bn a year tha this measure is aimed at
Oh yes!
Any company registered in a Tax Havens/Secrecy Jurisdictions can pretend to be dormant. In fact pretend to do anything that diverts attention away from what they actually do!!
When a company makes no disclosure of beneficial owners, shareholders, directors or managers how on earth can anyone scrutinise the company’s trading records? Particularly if the only address provided is a PO Box in the Virgin Islands for a shell company owned by another shell company registered in Nevis
Then both these company’s books may be held in a another shell company registered in Mauritius. All these companies will have an intrinsic ability to “fly” to another accommodating Tax Haven at the first sniff of any enquiry/scrutiny..
With the greatest of respect you do appear rather naive.
Thanks for this, signed and tweeted!
The British Establishment is in a shadowy place; contaminated by money the UK national interest has been mortgaged to the City Of London interest.
It is the City of London which is at the hub providing a web of tax havens that radiate around the world scavenging and feeding off the largess of big business and wealthy individuals who wrap their “profits” in shell companies, tax immune funds, quasi banks, and other vehicles of deception — all with the facility to “fly” at the first suggestion of “regulation” or “inspection”.
There is still a long way to go, but Caroline Lucas MP’s e-petition is a most important step.
It is a pity that this petition is coming from Caroline Lucas.
For years she sat not only as an MEP but on the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee – yet refused to tell the UK people, in whose name she held such a privileged position, what the Commission was signing them up for with Mode 4.
Mode 4 will cause huge job losses,
But it didnt ‘suit the image’ to talk about labour migration.
Now, this does ‘suit the image’ and is handy self promotion.
As I say – its a pity its not coming from someone with integrity.
Admitted, that is hard to find.
