Green Fiscal Commission

Posted on

A Green Fiscal Commission has been launched. I welcome this, and its objective about which it says:

There is now general agreement among policy analysts that a significant programme of green fiscal reform (in which environmental taxes are increased, and other taxes are reduced in a fiscally neutral way) could play a considerable role in contributing to the cost-effective solution of environmental problems, and in particular climate change.

The objective of the Green Fiscal Commission (GFC) is to prepare the ground for a significant programme of green fiscal reform in the UK.

I have one reservation about this group's prospects for success. Looking at the list of Commissioners, worthy as they are, none appears to be a tax expert. And Green taxes, likely any other form of tax have to be workable as well as worthy. Which means at least one well qualified tax accountant appraised in the ways of tax fiddling needs to be amongst those working on the issue.
